    International Listening Association (ILA)

    Call for Submissions: NCA 2013

    UNIT INFORMATION

The International Listening Association (ILA) defines the listening process as receiving, constructing meaning from and responding to spoken and/or nonverbal messages within a variety of contexts: health, education, spiritual, intercultural, interpersonal, environmental, spiritual, organizational, media, political and second language acquisition. We seek paper sessions, panel discussions, and competitive papers that deal with listening skills, research, pedagogy, training and application within various contexts, but any papers, sessions, and panels dealing with any facet of listening will be accepted and reviewed. Collaborations with federal and other organizations within the Washington DC area are welcomed. Submissions examining this cross-disciplinary integration of theory and/or practice of listening will be given special consideration as well as submissions addressing the convention theme of “Connections.” Of particular interest is how effective listening skills foster “connections” by creating and maintaining effective communication within and among organizations.

The ILA invites submission of competitive individual papers, paper sessions, and panel discussions having general interest to the membership of ILA and the field of listening. All submissions must be made via NCA Submission Central. Emailed or mailed submissions will not be accepted. For a definition of submission types, please refer to the step-by-step “How to Submit” Instructions provided in the Convention Library linked to the NCA Convention website: www.natcom.org/convention

All submitted papers may also be selected for the Scholar to Scholar format. The Scholar to Scholar format is designed for engaging "neighborhoods of knowledge." While posters are an acceptable format for Scholar to Scholar presentations, other interactive media can also be utilized including video, slide shows, and experiential activities. If you would like to be considered for Scholar to Scholar, please check the correct agreement box during the submission process.

DEADLINE FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS: Wednesday, MARCH 27, 2013 at 11:59 Pacific Time

    SUBMISSION TYPES

    1.   Competitive Individual Papers should include a title, an abstract of the paper (limit to 250 words), and be a maximum of 25 double spaced 12 point font pages of text (not including tables, figures, cover page, and references).  Papers outside of this requirement may not be accepted and/or even reviewed. To ensure blind review, submitters should remove their names from the cover page before uploading the document, and no information identifying the author may appear in the paper. Instructions on how to prepare a blind copy are provided in the Convention Library. Any audiovisual needs must be specified at the time of submission. Submitters must upload one copy of their paper to NCA's Submission Central. Recognition for the Top Paper will be awarded.

Competitive individual papers will be considered for ILA panels and Scholar to Scholar (S2S). Submitters may identify if they would like their papers to be considered for S2S by checking the appropriate agreement box.

    2.   Panel Discussion Proposals must include the following four components: 1) a title and a 75-word abbreviated description of the panel that will appear as the session description in the online convention program (if accepted) 2) a panel session chair with affiliation indicated, 3) a list of presenters and their respective affiliations, and 4) a rationale (750 words maximum) of the content and format of the panel.

    3.   Paper Session Proposals must include the following four components: 1) a title and a 75-word abbreviated description of the paper session that will appear as the session description in the online convention program (if accepted) 2) 2) a paper session chair with affiliation indicated, 3) a title and 250-word abstract and author information for EACH paper and 4) a session rationale justifying the importance and relevance of the session.

Submissions addressing the convention theme and collaborations with federal agencies or other Washington DC area groups/organizations are encouraged. Additionally, cross-disciplinary approaches to listening that include members of other NCA units and groups are particularly encouraged.

I have just come to meet William Shelton, an artist at intercultural communication nearly a century ago.  His life caught him between his own local tribe and the new Christians in the area of the State of Washington.  If there is a place for a commentary on the listening of an intercultural star at our conference, I would like to share a little of his stories and experience with you.  Aloha, Vincenne  (vwaxwood@hotmail.com )

I was doing some research on scholarships/grants, and ran across a grant from the American Speech Language Hearing Foundation for $50,000-$75,000. The focus of the research is working with disabilities. I know your scholarship is listening, and I wasn't quite sure if anything you are potentially researching may have some sort of overlap with what they want. If not, I thought someone you know might be interested in applying for the grant.

    Hello friends,

My name is Samuel Palomares and I am a graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin. I am currently collecting data for a project focusing on the role of listening in close relationships. I was wondering if you know of anybody looking for additional panelists to join their interpersonal or listening panel for this year's NCA or ILA convention?

In short, the goal of my current investigation is to explore listener characteristics and their impact on mental well-being. Perhaps engaging in active-empathic listening, as frequently taught, may not only be relationally harmful, but can also have mental well-being consequences.

Ideally, I would like to join a panel focused on relational listening or listening in close relationships.

Please email me at sam11b@utexas.edu if you have leads. Thanks!

The International Listening Association (listen.org) reminds us that March is International Listening Awareness Month — but it's always a good time to put your ears in a mindful place.

    ILA Synergist Award

The ILA Research Committee announces the listening research Synergist Award for 2012.  Outlined in a 2008 White Paper steered by Dr. Graham Bodie, Dr. Laura Janusik, and Dr. Tuula-Riitta Välikoski, the Synergist Award promotes the advancement of listening knowledge and research through a targeted focus. Using a deductive process, listening scholars and educators have developed a set of priorities for listening research. The priorities include four initiatives and seven research questions, as well as contextualized questions in the areas of Business, Education, Healthcare, Religion/Spirituality, and Theory/Research. Achieving these priorities will assist researchers in providing a solid foundation for future listening research in terms of future theory development. A Synergist is one who cooperates with another. Thus, the researchers granted the ILA Synergist Award will be those cooperating with international listening scholars to build listening theory. We encourage multi-author proposals as well as cross-cultural research but will accept single authored work assuming it meets relevant objectives.

The ILA Synergist Award was developed to encourage researchers to address one or more of the stated priorities. The researcher(s) awarded the cash prize (up to $500) will be expected to present the findings at the next ILA conference as well as permit the International Journal of Listening the first right of publication for the first manuscript stemming from this work.

The deadline for receipt of the award applications is end of day, Feb. 3rd, 2012.

For the full application and further details about the award you can visit the awards section of the ILA website (www.listen.org/Awards), click the following link http://listen.org/Resources/Documents/2012_%20ILA%20Synergist%20Award%20Application.docx, or you may directly contact Christopher Gearhart, ILA Research Chair, at cgearh1@lsu.edu or 619.817.6501.
