Announcing the Publication of Kristine Muñoz’s Transcribing Silence

Left Coast Press, Inc. is pleased to announce the publication of Kristine Muñoz’s Transcribing Silence. This volume of short narrative pieces comprised of both autoethnographies and fictional stories explores the many dimensions of silence, a crucial but often overlooked communication phenomenon, one that drives much of everyday talk and relationships. It’s an essential work for those who study and teach interpersonal communication.

Kristine Muñoz is Professor of Communication Studies and Latin American Studies at the University of Iowa and is also an award-winning author. The book is part of our Writing Lives: Ethnographic Methods series edited by Art Bochner and Carolyn Ellis.

Did anyone see the articles in the NY Times Education section today, Sunday?

There was an interesting article for those interested in listening and gender. I tried to insert

a table here from the article showing how men listen for nonverbal signals of a woman's consent and women think that verbal communication is listened to. Not sure I am doing justice to this, but there is definitely something for listening scholars to consider with regards gender communication.

It is a short article, and the table suggests some questions. Take a look and see what you think.

This is old news for listening scholars, but still a challenge to our interest.

    Hello listening friends!

I’m excited to share the new release of my listening-themed poetry book, THE BEAUTY OF LISTENING. This collection explores and honors the ever-challenging art and skill of listening.

Several great writers, readers and listeners have given the book an early read and enthusiastic endorsements, including ILA's Lyman K. "Manny" Steil, Alan R. Ehrlich, Jerry Catt-Oliason, Margarete Imhof and Kay Lindahl.  (To see book endorsements, click here.)

Excerpts from the book description:  Inside these pages, you’ll meet paper dolls and monsters, writers at work and words at play, and you’ll find many open questions of perspective...  While each poem tells its own story, the collection also tells a larger listening story.  From thoughts on where listening begins to the evolution of words and communication styles, the story leads into the deep need for listening time, both inner and interpersonal. Inner listening is explored from intuition to where inner and interpersonal listening entwine, making self-awareness essential for truly listening to others.”

THE BEAUTY OF LISTENING is available through Amazon and other major online booksellers.

    Thanks for listening, friends.  :)
