Listening (ILA, 1996): the process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken and/or nonverbal messages

Convention Paper Resource Center

Introduction

The International Listening Association (ILA) is a professional organization whose members are dedicated to learning more about the impact listening has on all human activity. Our membership includes professionals from such diverse areas as education, business, health care, government, and law. Consequently, our diversity gives us opportunities to explore the rich and complex nature of listening from a wide range of perspectives. We meet at annual conventions and regional conferences across the country and in other countries to share our expertise, to support listening research efforts, and to promote the practice and teaching of effective listening.
