Is ILA Listening to Herstory? Understanding the Foundations We Need to Build A World Of Developing Peace
Description: As we listen, we learn more about our own world and about the world of other people. The foundations for listening begin with our own attitudes, our own beliefs, our own prejudices, and our own customs; but if we are to make our world a better world, we must suspend "our own" and listen with total empathy to the other. The author examines the stories of women in America, Africa, Asia, and Europe, and looks to the ILA for a response of policy and action to make the lives of women of the world comparatively equal to that of their male counterparts.WordPerfect 6.1 (PC) Total pages: 19

Listening Intent and Speaker Appearance: A New Perspective
Description: Research reveals numerous factors that contribute to a listener prejudging a speaker and, thus, blocking effective interpersonal communication. One such finding is dress or clothing attire as it relates to public image. This study's purpose was to obtain empirical evidence to support the widely held belief that the speaker's wearing of a business suit will significantly affect the readiness with which a stranger will be motivated to listen to him/her. Additionally, this study provides descriptive data on some of the speaker-related factors which may encourage an unfamiliar listener to engage, on an interpersonal level, in the listening act.Microsoft Word 98 (Mac) Total pages: 14

The Struggle To Be Human
Description: This Keynote Address focuses on resolving controversy/conflict by fully understanding our opponents and making ourselves fully understood. Nichols addresses three issues: (1) listening contributions of ten individuals who have laid the foundation for the ILA; (2) the relationship between ILA’s goals and Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs; and (3) eleven principles as well as an action plan to guide the ILA in scientifically proving that understanding and being understood is essential not only to reducing external and internal conflict but also to making ourselves more fully human.Microsoft Word 8.0 (PC) Total pages: 7
