The Social Contexts of Tutoring: Listening as an Essential
Aspect of the Mentoring Relationship with Older At-Risk Readers
Description: This research paper describes four literacy success stories (i.e.,
case study pairings of college student volunteer tutors and fourth grade at-risk
children). Cobb details the successful dyads and then identifies common themes,
characteristics, and categories which emerged from data analysis. One major
finding is that effective tutors are skillful communicators and model listeners;
listening appeared as an essential component of the mentoring relationship in
all four successful dyads. Graphics are not included on disk.

Creative Listening: Is Bad Listening Good?
Description: The creative listener is an explorer and an artist who uses both
listening skills and faulty listening behaviors to develop new ideas and novel
solutions to problems. An explorer is curious, develops a map of listening
objectives, does not overlook the obvious, overcomes fears, and takes notes on
his/her own ideas. An artist transforms information by adapting, connecting,
comparing, and parodying ideas.
