Effective
Listening - The Odyssey of Nonverbal Signals and Cues
This paper is intended
to give insight into both audible and visual nonverbal cues and to provide experiences,
which will enable the reader to understand the pragmatic application of these
cues in an interpersonal communication event.
Its immediate application is instruction, but because nonverbal elements
are so important, it also has a general application.

In
the Eye of the Beholder: Children's
Perception of Good and Poor Listening Behavior
This empirical study uses a semi-structured interview to investigate the perception of good and poor listening behavior by elementary students. Results show that children place most value on overt listening behavior. The question is how adults adjust their listening behavior as they are listening to children.

Good
& Poor Listening Behavior across Situations, Perceived Listener Status &
Cultures
This empirical
study investigates differential perceptions of good and poor listening behavior
across different communicative fields, perceived listener status (superior,
equal, subordinate), and cultures (Germany, United States).
Results show that the accounts for good and poor listening behavior depend
on the topic, the assigned listener status, and the cultural background of the
communication.

Teaching
Listening: What Do We Know?
What Should We Know?
Listening is the
communication activity most often used on any given day, and it is recognized
as one of the four most important skills for undergraduates to possess.
However, it receives little instructional time at the college level.
Currently, there are few theories to guide the teaching of listening.
But, with the help of Teacher Research, we can create and test theories
to build a more complete listening pedagogy.

Listening
to English: Problems for Japanese
Learners of English
Spoken English
is particularly difficult for Japanese learners.
There are many factors involved, but in this paper, phonetic and phonological
data are considered. The issues
involved should be of interest to anyone involved with second language teaching/learning.

Listening
Practices of Leaders
Listening practices
of leaders were examined, utilizing the Listening Practices Feedback Report
with leaders in the southwest United States.
Listening was divided into five indices of attention, empathy, memory,
open mind, and respect. All leaders
scored "high" on four of five indices and "very high" on
the fifth index of memory. Hispanic
females scored highest on the memory index.

Listening
and Referring to Voices: Students'
Repertory in Educational Settings
In this study,
eight students in teacher education are videotaped for 12 hours of group talks
and construction of meaning during half a year with a tutor and an observer.
Various kinds of reported speech is used as an indication of different
listening repertory, and the patterns display what contextual resources the
students are using during the interaction.
Results from the students intertextual behavior indicate that some of
the students have a broad and some a narrow listening repertory when it comes
to explicit reported speech.

Relationship
Between Introversion/Extroversion and Listening Competence
An analysis of
the relationship between measured levels of introversion/extroversion and measured
listening skills. No correlations
between introversion/extroversion and composite scores on the listening test
were found, though some elements of the listening test were significantly related
to the psychological variable. Future
research is suggested.

Listening:
The Art of Medical Specialty Consultation
Successful medical
specialty consultation depends on effective communication of questions posed
by a variety of "clients," patients, families, physicians, and other
health care providers. Until now,
no structure has been proposed to insure that each party's questions are heard
and answered or that each party receives needed responses from the specialist.
The paper presents a structured format for effective listening and communication
in a medical specialty environment.

Moving
Students Toward Competent Listening: The
Thompson-Dathe Integrative Listening Model (ILM)
The Integrative Listening Model (ILM) is a framework for teaching and assessing listening systematically and developmentally in an academic setting. We provide a process (listening preparation, receiving, constructing meaning, responding) viewed through three dimensions of the listener--attitude, knowledge, and skills/behavior. The developmental nature of listening competence is clustered into 3 levels (beginning, intermediate, and advanced), and criteria for assessing and self assessing student's listening performance are generally defined.

Linking
Listening & Empathy
Borrowing from the practices of Martin Buber, Carl Rogers and others, this research moves from non-evaluation of listening to synergy as listening. The author gleans suggestions and ideas for extending our own listening presence into the mind of the person to whom we listen.

Listening
& Mentoring
This report as part of a larger field study examines the mentoring program for theatre majors at a regional university in the southern United States. Results from in-depth interviews with a protégé and a mentor reveal that a successful mentor must meet the requirements of good listening. A mentor needs to be there for the protégé and develop a relational bond with the protégé by showing empathy, caring, and equality.
