Qualitative Research: Critical for Understanding Listening
We will argue in this paper that the qualitative is always primary in the
study of the experience of human social interaction and is necessarily called
forth whenever the quantitative is invoked. The analogous argument will be
made for the study of listening: qualitative research is always called forth
as background and in fact quantitative research requires qualitative as explanatory
ground.

An Insight into
Current German Research on the Subject of listening, as Exemplified by the
Educational Project “GanzOhrSein”
The article gives us an exemplary insight into research in Germany that deals directly or directly with aspects of listening. The reader is given a clear picture of the Munich University project GanzOhrSein aimed at promoting listening skills in schools. The educational value of listening is initially derived from research findings and the model course of action to promote listening skills is explained via the cultural potential. The findings of the accompanying research clearly show that the diverse ways of promoting listening ability that have been developed and tested, so broaden the hearing and listening habits of the children and teachers participating in the project, and do facilitate listening conditions in lessons. The article will also demonstrate what researchers and everyday school practice can gain from this project, and how the institutionalization of the promotion of listening can benefit.

Teaching Listening: A
Research Based Approach
One of the difficulties with teaching listening at the university level is the lack of compiled researched-based materials. A primary challenge with writing a listening textbook is the tension between theory and application. Additionally, listening research has theoretical perspectives, but no testable theory. Consequently, the ability to buttress the listening application with theory is very weak. This paper introduces the “Listening Quad,” a theoretical and researched-based foundation from which to teach listening.

A factor-analytical
Investigation of Listening Concepts in a German and a US-American Sample.
This study investigates the underlying dimensions of listening concepts of laypersons by using factor-analytical methodology. The resulting scales are submitted to cross-cultural comparisons that show that there are differences in the way that listening is conceptualized. It is open to discussion what this means for training and teaching.
