Listening Theory and Student Development Theory: Implications for Students and Academic Advisors
General listening theories and established student development theory both place the responsibility for creating meaning upon the listener. Connecting these two theories will result in more meaningful educational experiences for students. This research reveals the connection between these two frameworks and explores how this connection could benefit college students by offering a lesson plan and supporting materials for a class designed to help students find their academic major.

24 Hours in a Day: A Listening Update to the Time Studies
Scholars and educators use Rankin’s (1926) and Bostrom’s et al. (1980) time studies to establish the need for listening training, instruction, and research. However, little is known about the impact of personal mass media devices, like the Internet, e-mail, and CD’s, on students’ listening activity. Additionally, little is known about students’ listening activities in different contexts. Thus, this pilot study (N = 208) reports on how students’ use of time differs in the contexts of school, friends, work, and family as well as the role that mediated technology play in students’ use of time.
